 Jason Stein is a clarinet player from Chicago, very active in various jazz and improv groups, but I think this is the first time I hear him (unless as part of Kyle Bruckmann’s Wrack?). Still, here comes a CD of bass clarinet solos that threw me down. What a soloist! Marvelous work with harmonics, some furious passages, but most of all a take on the solo that is neither a catalog of techniques or a demonstration of virtuosity. The result: a captivating record that left me in awe.
